Description:
A man well disciplined and trained in the latest military tactics. He was supporetd by the New Model Army, and captured Charles I in 1646.
After the end of the English Civil War and the beheading of the king. Cromwell proclaimed England a republic of the commonwealth. There was opposition from Ireland and Scotland, which Cromwell crushed, but there was also opposition in England. There were Levellers, who advocated for freedom of speech, religious toleration, and a democratic republic. They wanted women's equality with men. Cromwell smashed the radicals by force.
He also found it difficult to work with the Rump Parliament and dispersed it by force. He had destroyed both the king and the Parliament. He dissolved Parliament and divided the country into regions, and gave everyone a 10% tax. Resorted to military force to continue his rule. He died, and the restoration of the Stuart monarchy ended this time of troubles.
