Alfonzo de Albuquerque (dec 20, 1462 – aug 17, 1515)

Description:

Albuquerque sailed into Malacca, a thriving Muslim port. The Portuguese seized the city and took control of the fort. By doing this, they weakened Arab control of the spice trade and also obtained a vital port on the way to the Spice Islands.

The Portuguese empire was still limited, because it only had trade posts in India and China, and only on the coasts.

They were successful because of their sophisticated naval technology, and ability to have cannons on their ships that were equipped for long voyages.
