Protest Reformation (jan 1, 1517 – jan 1, 1648)
Description:
1. A movement within Western Christianity in Europe that posed a religious and political challenge to the Roman Catholic Church.
2. Its religious aspects were supplemented by ambitious political rulers who wanted to extend their power and control at the expense of the Church.
3. A weakening of the old order was already underway in Northern Europe, as evidenced by the emergence of thriving new cities and a determined middle class.
4. Over the centuries there had been many reform efforts within the Catholic Church, most notably a series of largely unsuccessful church councils.
5. The undisputed leader of this movement was Spain
