German Appeasement (jan 1, 1938 – mar 15, 1939)

Description:

The German Appeasement was in 1938 when Hitler claimed that the German citizens (who were living in the Sudetenland) were being wrongly treated, so he demanded that Czechoslovakia give out the Sudetenland to Germany to avoid another war with Europe, Britain and France allowed Hitler to expand to the Sudetenland without agreeing with Czechoslovakia first.

CAUSES
Britain and France hoped that they would break out into another expensive and destructive world war so they gave up the Sudetenland to Germany.

The appeasement wouldn’t have occurred if Hitler hadn’t have been so ambitious as to demand another country to give up its land willingly.

EFFECTS
Germany invaded Czechoslovakia and ended up taking over Bohemia and they protectively controlled Slovakia which gained Germany more land (15th March 1939).
This ended appeasement because it had proved that Hitler had been lying and was not only interested in ‘a greater Germany’, but also expanding into other countries. This eventually ended with the invasion of Poland which started World War 2.

Germany gained more land and more power over the victorious allies due to Sudetenland was willingly given up.
Germany's land, resources and leverage expanded which was the gain they needed to start World War 2.
