The Rape of Nanking (dec 13, 1937 – jan 1, 1938)
Description:
The Nanjing Massacre/The Rape of Nanking originally was the Japanese attack on the capital of China Nanjing. Japan was trying to take the city and received resistance at first but then they succeeded, leading to the mutilation of around 200,000 to 300,000 people and the rape of many women and young girls. This occurred on the 13th of December 1937 continued until January 1938.
CAUSES
The Chinese resisted at the beginning, but were unable to hold their line and Japan broke through, even though they were only supposed to take the city and avoid other conflict.
Japan had a plan to take the city of Nanjing (Nanking) which ended up becoming a massacre.
EFFECTS
Japan wanted to expand their country for more land and resources, and the massacre was a contributing factor of this, and so Nanjing was one of the cities in line to be conquered.
Indonesia, the rest of China and Australia became concerned, since Japan had conquered Nanjing. This resulted in Australia bringing America into this part of the war for protection.
