Wilmot Proviso (feb 1, 1846 – jan 1, 1850)

Description:

the Wilmot Proviso was a piece of legislation proposed by David Wilmot at the close of the Mexican-American War. If passed, the bill(or law) would have outlawed slavery in territories acquired by the US as a spoil of any wars which the Us would be in, which included most of the Southwest and California as well. This legastlation was never passed but never the less sparked debate about seccesion.
