Haitian Revolution (jun 1, 1791 – jun 1, 1801)

Description:

The Haitian Revolution was roughly 10 years in the making. After a successful slave rebellion, the Haitians continued to push, trying to get St. Domingue, or what is now known as the Dominican Republic. Although the US supported the Haitians at first, they would eventually withdraw their support in fear that the revolution would spread to the US. The Haitians reason for rebellion is quite obvious, as no person wants to be held captive and used for their labor. The French Revolution offered the perfect opportunity for the slaves and non-slave Africans to revolt. While they would fight for 10 years to try to get the rest of the island, once the US withdrew, it became clear that Haiti was only going to be half the island. They were encouraged to, then did, declare independence, becoming the first nation in the postcolonial era to be black-led. The impact that this would have is significant. It showed everyone around the world that slaves could revolt, and it was the first of many movements. It was a predecessor to emancipation in the US, the end of the apartheid in South Africa, and many other movements.
