The Siege of Madrid (oct 8, 1936 – mar 28, 1939)
Description:
The Siege of Madrid had lasted for two and a half years during the Spanish Civil War. Previously the rebels of November 1936 who had attempted to overthrow and enter and take control of Madrid but failed. Initially Madrid was under the control of troops who were in support of the Republic, until General Franco arrived. General Franco, leader of the Nationalist forces, to take over Madrid with the assistance of his troops. The Nationalist were determined to take over the Republican capital. In an attempt to regain control over Madrid the government had sent Civil Guards to Seville in order to try and shut down the uprising rebellion. Although their attempt to regain control failed, Prime Minister Santiago Casares Quiroga resigned. The position of the Prime Minister had then been taken over by Diego Martinez Barrio, who was soon fired by José Giral. Jose Giral was able to create the well known slogan “They shall not pass,” which was used against the coup attack and helped Madrid and the Republic stay standing.
