MUSSOLINI BECOMES ITALIAN LEADER (jan 1, 1922 – jul 25, 1943)
Description:
Benito Amilcare Andrea Mussolini became the countries prime minister from 1922 until 1943. He started the Fascist party in 1919, the dictator was often referred to as “Il Duce” (“the Leader”).
He was very much a socialist at youth, travelling to other countries to project his beliefs, - he gained attention world wide for his magnetism. He was shortly imprisoned for his radical ways of sharing his beliefs before becoming a writer for one of Italy's biggest papers, giving him an audience and a voice.
He served on the front lines for several years (during WWI).
During 1919, Mussolini founded the fascist party - this movement proclaimed opposition to economical suppression and discrimination. He openly supported Nationalists, and hoped to return Italy to levels of its great Roman past.
His rise to power happened quite quickly after the 'Treaty of Versailles'. He publicly shamed the Italian government. He created a movement known as the 'Black Shirts', who terrorized political opponents and who helped increase the fascist influence to the public.
Italy was quickly falling into political chaos, Mussolini declared he was the only one who could save them. It was in 1922, when he was declared prime minister - and 1925, when he declared himself Dictator, once again taking the title as 'Il Duce".
Mussolini was the first open dictator of his time, many compare him to Hitler in this way. In fact, Mussolini's march on Rome in 1922, was the inspiration behind Hitlers Beer Hall Putsch. Which sparked the war in Germany.
He consistently disregarded both the Treaty of Versailles and The League of Nations. He conducted a series of crimes during WWII.
He was eventually hung upside down, publicly alongside his wife for his war crimes.
