Weimar Republic (feb 6, 1919 – aug 11, 1919)
Description:
The Weimar Republic was the government of Germany after the First World War in 1919 and until the rise of Hitler and the Nazi Party in 1933. The republic was formed at a national assembly in the town of Weimar, after Emperor Kaiser Wilhelm II was abdicated.
Causes
1. Germany had just lost the war and were forced to sign the Treaty of Versailles. This left the German people angry and confused because they did not think that the treaty was unfair. The Germans were confused and needed to quickly create a new government as their previous government had just collapse. They chaotically and quickly formed the Weimar Republic.
2. With the abdication of Emperor Kaiser Wilhelm II, the structure of the Second Reich (German government during the First World War) collapsed. There was no Head of State and a new form of government had to be established.
Effects
1. The Second Reich had collapsed which meant that the new Weimar Republic was formed. This new government wrote a new constitution, which changed the way Germany was run and ruled.
2. The German population were angry and upset at the republic for agreeing to the unfair Treaty of Versailles and the Armistice. This increased Hitler’s popularity with the people because he did not support the Weimar Republic either.
