Alger Hiss Case (jan 1, 1948 – dec 31, 1948)
Description:
In 1948, Alger Hiss (had worked for President Roosevelt) was accused of being a communist spy
During the investigation it was found that he had copied some state department documents
He was convicted of perjury and sentenced to 5 years in prison
With Hiss having worked at the top level of government, it suggested that Hoover was right - communist spies were everywhere
This increased fears of communism even further
