Description:
Berlin, just has Germany had, was split into 4 zonesBerlin itself, was in the Soviet Zone of Germany
In 1948, Stalin closed off all road and rail links between West Berlin and the western zones of Germany
The western allies responded by airlifting vital supplies to West Berlin
This led many people to fear that another war would break out
In 1949 Stalin called off this blockade
However, fears of the USSR led to the setting up of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) to defend themselves against Russian attack
