Jarrow March (oct 5, 1936 – oct 31, 1936)
Description:
This march from Jarrow to London was an organised protest against unemployment and poverty. About two hundred people brought a petition to the British government that requested that industry be re-established in Jarrow. This march was conducted after Palmer’s shipyard had closed and Jarrow lost its main employer. While the petition was not debated and nothing was immediately done, this event started a change in attitudes that later led to social reform after World War II.
