Spanish Conquest of Mexico (jan 1, 1519 – jan 1, 1521)
Description:
- Cortes led 450 soldiers from Veracruz on the Gulf coast to the island city of Tenochtitlan, the Aztec capital situated in Lake Texcoco and seized the emperor Motecuzoma II who later died in 1520 due to a skirmish between Spanish forces and the people of Tenochtitlan.
- Aztec forces pushed the Spanish out from the capital, but in 1521, he starved the city into surrender by blockading their capital
- Weapons alone could not taker control over the large, densely populated" Aztecs, so he made alliances with other indigenous peoples of Mexico who resented Aztec domination
- They provided thousands of veteran warriors, logistical support and secure bases in friendly territory
