 - In the 1640s, French, English, and Dutch settlers replaced the Spanish to build plantations, and they found that the Caribbean offered ideal conditions for growing cash crops, particularly sugar and tobacco
- They imported several million slaves to provide labor since indigenous populations were extinct
- By 1700: Caribbean society consisted of a small class of European administrators and large numbers of African slaves
