Description:
- Constitutional government came after "poltiical and religious" conflicts
- Rebellion ensued after King Phillip II of Spain moved to suppress an increasingly popular Calvinist movement in the Netherlands
- In 1581, seven northern provinces (modern day Netherlands) declared themselves as the independent United Provinces
- By the early 17th century: they became the Dutch republic, and effectively organized affairs in the northern Low Countries
