European States Systems (jan 1, 1648 – dec 31, 1914)

Description:

- no single empire mediates disputes
- European states all sovereign and equal
--> Religious and Domestic affairs protected
--> Weak "balance of powers"
- didn't bring the end to wars as war was almost constant in early modern Europe
- Rapid innovation in military technology so as to not get left behind
--> fought small wars with each other until WWI, but mainly used military power to uphold power, and towards rest of the world like the Americas
