Description:
 - Grandson of "new monarchs" (Spain's Fernando and Isabel)
- Ruled all of Spain, and most of Western hemisphere colonies (Spanish America) = massive
Type of Ruler: More centralized state, taxes, armies, control over nobles
- tried to revive Holy Roman Empire, but failed because of German nobility objecting to it, and fight with French
- 1556, he abdicated his throne due to his inability to suppress the Lutherans in his territory, and went to a monastery in Spain
