A lethal threat to journalism (jan 1, 1992 – jan 1, 2017)
Description:
36 different journalists have been killed during this era.
"Violence against journalism is a vicious cycle emerging out of impunity", said Jan-Albert Hootsen, the CPJ's Mexico correspondent.
In 2016, Javier Valdez issued a statement about the importance of journalism, especially those who work to cover organized crime, drug trafficking and corruption in Mexico after one of his colleagues was shot and killed on the job. (He was one of many journalists in Mexico at this time that had been killed doing their job.)
“Let them kill us all, if that is the death sentence for reporting this hell,” he tweeted. “No to silence.”
After the tweet, Valdez suffered the same death of the drug-fueled violence while reporting on the job.
