John Thibault and Harold Kelley wrote about social exchange theory in their 1959 book "A Social Psychology of Groups".
Social exchange theory is a sociological and psychological theory that studies the social behavior in the interaction of two parties that implement a cost-benefit analysis to determine risks and benefits. Basically it means because the principle of human society is to help each other, others give you benefits and you have to pay back. Therefore, the process of social interaction can be said to be an exchange process. This theory can occur in different relationship, such as romantic relationships, friendships, professional relationships...
