Genpei War (jan 1, 1180 – jan 1, 1185)
Description:
The Genpei war was the last of a series of conflicts between two clans in the Imperial Court during the late Heian Period (their names respectively being the Minamoto and the Taira).
The conflict would begin sometime in 1179, when the Taira Clan would lead a coup d'état in the government in an attempt to remove the Minamoto from all government posts. In the following year the Minamoto would lead a call to arms against the Taira with series of battles throughout Japan until 1185.
The last battle had took place in Dan-no-ura as a naval battle, with the Minamoto Clan under Minamoto No Yorimoto (as his cousin and rival Minamoto No Yoshinaka would be killed in Awazu against Yorimoto's forces). With no other to oppose Yorimoto, he would establish a military government (shogunate) in the city of Kamakura, thus beginning the Kamakura Shogunate.
