Tokugawa Shogunate (oct 21, 1600 – jan 3, 1868)

Description:

The Tokugawa Shogunate is the last of it's government type, ruling with absolute power until 1868, with the Meiji Restoration giving power back to the Imperial Government with it's reforms that would ultimately end the age of samurai and the warrior caste system.

Taking power from the last head of government (Toyotomi Hideyori), the first shogun (Ieyasu) had risen to power with no virtual opposition that was strong enough to challenge him for very long. Edo would be made the de-facto capital of the Tokugawa (as it was the residence of the shogun) with Heian-Kyo remaining as the residence of the Emperor.

The shogunate was very well known for it's extreme isolationist policies; banning all Catholic missionaries and preventing all forms of immigration in and out of the country (there was very little European influence in the country that the shogunate would permit, the only sort of European gateway for Japan was a Dutch factory located in Dejima, Nagasaki), this was the law of "Sakoku"
