Azuchi-Monoyama Period (jan 1, 1568 – jan 1, 1600)
Description:
This period had seen the unification of most of Japan under the Oda Clan, with Oda Nobunaga as the first leader. During his time in office, he had deposed Ashikaga Yoshiaki as the shogun after the fall of the "Anti-Oda Coalition" in 1573, with no shogunate taking power until the rise of the Tokugawa. Nobunaga's end would come in 1582, when Akechi Matsuhide would launch a short rebellion against Nobunaga in Honno-ji, resulting in Nobunaga's death.
After the Nobunaga and Mitsuhide's death, with no successor left for the Oda, Toyotomi Hideyoshi would take his place as the new head of government in 1583. His first actions would be the destruction of the Hojo Clan in the 3rd Siege of Odawara Castle, resulting in the death of Hojo Ujimasa and the banishment of Hojo Ujinao in 1590. Two years later, Hideyoshi would lead a naval invasion of Korea (to which he would not see end as he would die in September 1598, with the war ending on November of the same year), with the war being a defeat for Japan and a serious blow against the Toyotomi Clan's power.
After the death of Hideyoshi, his nephew Hideyori was still young and so a council of 5 daimyo had been established to act as a regent for the time being. Though having their own internal struggles, the council (and Hideyori) would soon be deposed by Tokugawa Ieyasu (one of the council members), as he would lead his clan in a victory at the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600 against the rest. In which the Tokugawa Shogunate, the last shogunate of Japan, would be established in 1603 with the capital being moved to Edo.
(Though the Toyotomi Clan's resistance would still continue after the displacement of Hideyori, the last of it would soon be stamped out in the Siege of Osaka on the 22nd of January 1615, which would be the official date that the Sengoku Period would end and the Tokugawa Shogunate would have no political opposition).
(It is generally agreed that this period had begun when Oda Nobunaga had marched his army into Kyoto in the same month as the death of the 14th shogun Ashikaga Yoshihide to place Ashikaga Yoshiaki as his successor in October 1568).
