Kamakura Shogunate (jan 1, 1185 – jan 1, 1333)

Description:

The Kamakura Shogunate is the first shogunate of Japan, founded in the city of Kamakura (the first de-facto capital of Japan as the Shogunate had more political power than the Imperial Court).

The first three Shoguns of the Kamakura were of the Minamoto Clans (named Yorimoto, Yoriie and Sanemoto), the next two of the Fujiwara Clan (Yoritsune and Yoritsugu) with the last 4 being regent puppet leaders (Munetaka, Koreyasu, Hisaaki and Morikuni).

Though there were shoguns in this period, after the death of Yorimoto, they had no real political power. The real power was held in the position of shikken (regent), a title that was created and held exclusively by members of the Hojo Clan.
