Visits Tenerife:
- Hawkins family had friends and business associates here

Visits Cape Verde and down the Guinea coast to Sierra Leone:
- Loaded ships with slaves bought from the Portuguese, stolen from other slavers, or captured in fierce battles with natives
- Hawkins took so many slaves that he had to commandeer a Portuguese vessel to carry the slaves he could not cram into his own holds
- Due to the success of the voyage (in terms of profitability), Hawkins sent home a small vessel which Drake was apparently aboard
- The other ships continued to the West Indies for a round of trading at the ports of La Española
