Potato Famine (sep 13, 1845 – sep 13, 1849)
Description:
In Ireland, many people depended on potatoes as a principal food. When a fungus-like infection spread throughout the crops, almost 1/2 of all the potatoes were destroyed in 1845, and 3/4 in the next 7 years. In these harsh 8 years, 1 million deaths by famine were counted. This was a big factor in migration to America as well.
