Sino-Japanese War (aug 1, 1894 – apr 12, 1895)

Description:

In 1894 a rebellion broke out in Korea, China and Japan had sent troops to Korea. This turned into a war between China and Japan. Japan had a modernized army that was able to defeat china's forces. Japan had wanted Korea because of its resources. Japan does not have that many natural resources that are needed to industrialize. Therefore, they seek resources from other lands such as Korea. By looking at this event politically we can see that Japan is trying to extend its reach into the mainland. This war marked the emergence of Japan as a world power. Furthermore, they do not want westerners in Korea as it is really close to Japan. The sino-Japanese was able to show Japanese military power was greater than that of the Chinese. The governmental and technological changes that resulted from the Meiji restoration gave Jpan victory in this war.
