Great Purge/Slaughtering of the Hens (jan 1, 1936 – jan 1, 1938)
Description:
In this time period, Joseph Stalin had hundreds of thousands of Soviet citizens killed in order to protect his political power (regardless of whether or not they were truly dissidents). Animal Farm mirrors this when Napoleon orders the deaths of other farm animals. In fact, he had them make false confessions, having pigs confess that "they had been secretly in touch with Snowball ever since his expulsion, that they had collaborated with him in destroying the windmill, and that they had entered into an agreement with him to hand over Animal Farm to Mr Frederick" (Orwell 54-55). Just as Stalin ordered any potential rivals to be executed, so does Napoleon.
