Ernest R. Hilgard (jul 25, 1904 – oct 22, 2001)

Description:

Ernest R. Hilgard was an American psychologist and professor at Stanford University. He became famous in the 1950s for his research on hypnosis, especially with regard to pain control.

Hilgard's Neodissociation theory of hypnosis is a classic theory. It proposes that hypnotic phenomenon are produced through a dissociation within high level control systems. He explained that hypnosis results in dissociation of conscious awareness. This results in part of conscious awareness that responds to suggestions of the hypnotist while the "hidden observer" remains in the background observing.
