King Henry VII (feb 24, 1509 – oct 2, 1547)
Description:
King Henry VII wanted to divorce his first wife, Catherine of Aragon because he had fallen in love with Anne Boleyn. The Pope would not annul the king's marriage because the pope was now dependent on Charles V (remember the sack of Rome?) and Charles was Catherine's nephew.
Thomas Cranmer and Thomas Cromwell advised the king that he should create his own religious court to get his annulment. An act from Parliament cut of all appeals from the English church courts to Rome, and Henry created a church of England without papal authority. This allowed hinm to get his annulment.
This started the reformation in England.
