- One of the first major trading empires of the post-classic period. Its most lucrative natural resource were gold and salt, though it also traded slaves and textiles.
- Islam began to spread vastly in this region and eventually the king adopted the religion.
- The Mali Empire was able to easily take over in 1240 due to invasions and a drought that weakened its economy.
