Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan (dec 25, 1979 – feb 15, 1989)
Description:
The Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan to support its communist government and fight the US-backed anti-communist Mujahadeen. The conflict between the two sides quickly turned into a stalemate as the Soviet Union struggled to counter the Mujahadeen's guerilla warfare. Furthermore, the Soviet Union's weak economy struggled to maintain such a large military force in Afghanistan. Due to these reasons, the Soviet Union exited Afghanistan in 1989.
