Federlist Era (jan 1, 1788 – jan 3, 1800)
Description:
With the ratification of the Constitution, the 1790’s saw the birth of new political parties in our young nation. One of these parties, the Federalist Party, came to be a dominant political force in Early America. The party of Alexander Hamilton and James Madison were hugely successful in the early going, winning 10 of the first 12 Congressional elections as well as electing people like Adams and Madison to the presidency. This party ran on a fiscal policy based around Hamiltonian ideals and promote trade between other nations as well as promoting an increase in Federal power. Eventually, this group was unable to overcome the Democratic-Republicans, the election of Thomas Jefferson in 1800 signaled the beginning of the end of Federalist dominance as the result of the election lead to a fractured and disjointed Federalist party. The Federlist Party would never recover from these decisive defeats, finally coming to an end with the Federalist opposition to the War of 1812 being the nail in the coffin.
