Description:
John J. Scanlon was appointed auxiliary bishop for Honolulu in 1954. During his time as bishop he brought 9 religious communities to serve schools, hospitals, and various ministries within the diocese. Bishop Scanlon opened the Mary Jane Pearson Center for unwed mothers in 1976, retired at the age of 75, and died in 1997 (Conrad, 1999, p. 379).Added to timeline:
