Reign of Charles V (jun 28, 1528 – jan 1, 1558)
Description:
He rules Spain and the Holy Roman empire. He repeatedly tried and failed to end Protestantism and to create peace between the two. His armies rebelled against him and sacked Rome. Eventually the pressure from the pope, protestants, and ottomans forced him to renounce his titles and give them to his son Philip II. He lived out the rest of his life in a monastery.
