General of the Cavalry Prince Vasily Andreyevich Dolgorukov (1856–1866) (jan 1, 1856 – jan 1, 1866)

Description:

The first responsible mission, carried out by A.F. Orlov with great success, was associated with the signing of the Adrianople Treaty , which crowned the victory of Russia over the Ottoman Empire in 1829 . The conclusion of the Russian-Turkish world took place in a difficult environment: the Western European powers were anxiously awaiting whether Russia would continue the attack on the Turkish capital with the traditionally attributed goal of occupying Constantinople and the straits to the Russian autocracy.

Ultimately, the tsarist government was able to soberly assess the current situation - in St. Petersburg, supporters of moderation prevailed. Of fundamental importance for understanding the government course was that the existence of the Ottoman Empire seems to be more advantageous for Russia than its destruction. Even earlier, the emperor sent a letter to Commander-in-Chief I. I. Dibich, in which he ordered the case to be ended with "the beautiful Adrianople world." For his imprisonment, A.F. Orlov arrived in Adrianople.

After difficult negotiations on September 2, 1829 , the Adrianople Peace was concluded, which was of great political importance to Russia. After the conclusion of peace, the immediate task of Russian foreign policy was the restoration of friendly relations with the Ottoman Empire. Tsarism was ready to make certain concessions in order to eliminate foreign interference in Russian-Turkish relations and create conditions for rapprochement with the Port. For this purpose , an emergency embassy led by A.F. Orlov was sent to Constantinople .

Soon after arriving in Constantinople Orlov won a "special location of the Sultan." Porta hastened to fulfill part of the obligations under the Adrianople Treaty. The activities of the envoy extraordinary in Constantinople received the approval of his crowned friend. “I cannot even say how pleased Orlov is, he really acts in such a way that even surprises me, despite my disposition to him,” the emperor wrote to Dibichu in February 1830 .

Orlov’s new mission in Turkey was connected with the Bosphorus expedition of the Russian fleet of 1833 : Nicholas I again resorted to his help to settle matters in the East. By that time, he already had sufficient experience in negotiating with the Turks, enjoyed the authority of the Port and the confidence of the Sultan himself. On July 26, 1833, the Unkar-Isklesiysk Treaty was signed , according to which Russia pledged to come to the aid of Turkey if necessary. In response, the Ottoman Empire committed itself in an armed conflict to close the straits for the military courts of foreign powers.
