Rule of King John I of England (jan 1, 1199 – jan 1, 1216)

Description:

John's lands in France and Normandy were taken in 1204 by King Philip II of France. He returned permanently to England, very poor.
Had lay investiture conflict with Innocent III about the Bishop of Canterbury. John I seized the cathedral of Canterbury and began funneling Church funds to himself, denying Innocent III's appointed Bishop entry.
In response, Innocent III laid an interdict (a pause of sacraments laid on a place) on England in 1208 and Excommunicated John I in 1209.
In 1213 John learned that Innnocent was encouraging Philip II of France to invade England
John then agreed to become Innocent's VASSAL (the smartest decision he ever made).

After the Battle of Bouvines in 1214, John is defeated by Philip and John forces his norman nobles to forfeit their remaining lands. He doesn't want any of his vassals also being vassals to Philip.
In 1215 the Barons revolted against King John I and he signed the Magna Carta in June.

This greatly decreases John's power and land while Philips grew.
