Iran-Iraq War (sep 22, 1980 – aug 20, 1988)
Description:
The Iran-Iraq war was fought between the two nations in order to determine the dominant islamic gulf state. Both sides fought extremely dirtily, with the iraqis using a steady supply of deadly chemical weapons, while the iranians used waves of suicide soldiers of all ages, even children, in order to hold off the attack. The strategies and the way in which this war was raged was likened to the pain from WW1. Overall, this war wouldn't stop until the UN somewhat forced a peace deal, but not without deeply affecting US-Iranian relationships, as the US was backing the Iraqis, which meant that whatever semblance of a good relationships that the two powers would've had just got nullified because of the war. Many iranians today carry a sense of being abandoned by the international community and are quite unhappy about it.
