Glasnost and Perestroika (jan 1, 1985 – jan 1, 1991)
Description:
These two ideas were enacted during the Gorbachev era, which was defined by a series of liberal reforms. Perestroika involved increasing capital investment and pushing the country towards a semi-free market system. However, this was largely unsuccessful and the country was launched into chaos. Then, he had initiated Glasnost which involved democratizing the political system as well as allowing freedom of expression. He had also traveled abroad extensively and convinced foreigners that the U.S.S.R was no longer an international threat. The Soviet ideology was dramatically weakened, and tensions between international powers had heavily declined.
