Soviet-Afghan War (dec 24, 1979 – feb 15, 1989)
Description:
This was a war that marked the end of detente. After Afghanistan's communist party took power in 1978, relations between the party and the Soviet Union were soured when Hafizullah Amin took power and ordered the death of the former leader. As a result, the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan and instilled a Soviet loyalist as the new leader of the Afghanistan Communist party. Seeing this as an invasion, the West took to imposing sanctions, embargoes, and leading boycotts against the Soviet Union. For instance, when the U.S. led to the boycott against the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. With all of these actions taking place, Cold War tensions were once again rising, indicating the end of peace between the superpowers.
