Macnas: A Transformative Time (dec 1, 1989 – jan 1, 2020)

Description:

Macnas was formed during a transformative time in the arts. They were doing something new and exciting, the company was brave at the time. Macnas performed music and dance on the streets of Galway. The company also performed comedies, parodies and satires. Macnas was created by Páraic Breathnach, Ollie Jennings, Pete Sammon and Tom Conroy. These men aimed to re-establish community celebration through annual street parades or festivals, which would outlive even themselves (McDonagh, 2007).
At the time of its establishment Macnas had “more ideas than money”. They wanted to bring a new strand of theatre to Ireland. Its founders stated:
"We interpret the word community in the broad popular sense. We are interested in the pastimes, games and rituals of our community in the west. We wish to create dramatic, visual spectacles using and exploring these popular forms of communal entertainments. Our spectacles will be created in the community, in large outdoor familiar spaces. We hope to have fun and have fun on a grand scale and amongst ourselves." (Kilroy, 2002)
Macnas style is physical and visual, performances are interactive and staged in various settings. In the 1990’s Macnas took its energy to indoor venues, but not typical theatres. Instead they performed in unused garages and warehouses, providing classic showcases of Alice in Wonderland (1989), Treasure Island (1990) and Circus Story (1991). These shows were made for families and aimed at providing an accessible, exciting and inspirational theatrical experience for both children and adults (Macnas).
