Abraham Lincoln (mar 4, 1861 – apr 15, 1865)

Description:

Republican President - no southern states supported him. He victory led to the south leaving the Union, fearing that he would abolish slavery. He led the Union in the Civil War, taking decisive action to increase the power of the state to win the war. Abolished slavery in all areas controlled by the Union in 1862 and persuaded Congress to introduce the amendment which ended it everywhere in the US in 1865.

Signed the emancipation proclamation but abolished slavery to protect the union. Tried to work towards voting but was assassinated. He wasn't in favour of racial equality, only helped out of self-interest.
