Saturno devorando a su hijo (Saturn Devouring His Son) (jan 1, 1819 – jan 1, 1823)
Description:
The picture depicts the Titan Cronos (romanized name is Saturn) devouring his own son because he fears that they will usurp him. In the mythology, Saturn merely swallow them, but in the painting, he is chewing on them grotesquely. This painting is one of the 14 "Black Paintings" that Francisco Goya painted onto the walls of his house during the years that he was going deaf. The paintings, which are a darker style of romanticism, may reflect the state of mind he was in.
