John Brown's Raid (oct 16, 1859 – oct 18, 1859)

Description:

John Brown’s bloody and violent approach to combatting slavery greatly aided in the ascent of the Civil War. This particular raid consisted of Brown and his followers attempting to invade Harper’s Ferry in order to seize the arms and use them for their own vicious cause. Ultimately, the event was halted by the U.S. Marines (ironically led by Colonel Robert E. Lee) and Brown was sentenced to hang. John Brown’s raid fueled the growing fire on both sides: outrage for his violence in the South and a martyr for the abolitionist cause in the North.
