Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel "Uncle Tom's Cabin" was a fictional story exploring the life of slaves. It was a hit and northerners who read it felt like they had new exposure to the horrors of slavery. The book was the second best selling book of the 19th century and only fell second to the Bible.
