The Wilmot Proviso (jan 1, 1850 – feb 26, 1854)
Description:
This piece of legislation would have outlawed slavery in all of the new land acquired after the war against Mexico. Wilmot's bill failed but the debate around the Proviso started the first serious talks about secession.
