Freedom Summer (may 4, 1961 – dec 10, 1961)
Description:
These events sought to end the segregation against African Americans on Interstate buses. They wanted to force Kennedy's hand in enforcing this legislation.
Interracial group on these buses.
The bus was firebombed and many of them were beaten although nobody died.
JFK gave the riders federal marshals to protect them on the duration of the trip.
JFK agreed not to intervene when activists arrested for disturbing the peace.
Mass arrests across the Mississippi border. We were a result of the Supreme Court ruling that segregation on INTERSTATE buses and terminal facilities is unconstitutional. They were successful in that they got the federal government involved.
