Description: Two officers from Virginia, Meriwhether Lewis and William Clark, were appointed to lead a scientific expedition through the newly acquired Louisiana Territory. The expedition lasted two years. After the expedition, the two explorers brought back journals with all their observations, and maps of the regions they had traversed through.

Significance: This expedition was significant, as it was essentially a journey into no man's land from the American perspective. The success of the expedition prepared the United States to be able to successfully expand its territory. It was also a significant contribution to the social environment in that it redefined the limits of the realm of potential American success and prosperity among the general public.
