The Space Race (jan 1, 1955 – jan 1, 1975)

Description:

Happened in the middle of the Cold War.
A race between USSR and USA; to assert dominance.
Both countries spent a lot of money.
Russia made it to space first: 1957, Us soon after
In 1961, Russia put the first man in space, three weeks after US put a man in space.
Kennedy promised to put a man on the moon by the end of the decade.
US had 1st space walk in 1965 but Russia has their 1st walk 9 months before.
July 20, 1969, lunar lander on the moon and Neil Armstrong was the first man on the moon.
By the '70s US-USSR relations improved and they had joint mission in 1975.
This race had a huge impact on the technological advancements for both countries.
