The use of the word trench in the name of this condition is a reference to trench warfare, mainly associated with World War I, which started in 1914
Attrition Warfare: a military strategy consisting of belligerent attempts to win a war by wearing down the enemy to the point of collapse through continuous losses in personnel and material.
